Cone Penetration Testing
Specialists in providing integrated cone penetration testing, research and geotechnical design consulting to the ground engineering industry
GES works directly and exclusively with ground engineering contractors to deliver rigorous geotechnical design for technically demanding ground conditions. We combine geotechnical design consultancy with our own in-house advanced in situ testing capability — a pairing that allows us to close the gap between investigation and design that costs time and money in conventional delivery.
Our work spans land development, construction, utilities and civil infrastructure, with particular depth in large-scale brownfield and greenfield sites. We follow the work where it takes us.
Our methods:
- Foundation engineering and settlement modelling
- Earthworks design and validation
- Slope stability modelling
- Temporary works design
- Cone penetration testing
- Marchetti dilatometer testing
- Seismic velocity measurements
- Push-in shear vane
- Full-flow penetrometers
- Sampling
- Magnetometer surveys
- Dielectric and conductivity surveys
- Groundwater monitoring
- Mini zone load tests
- Push-in inclinometer installation and monitoring
- AGS data production and validation
- Geostatistical modelling
About Us
Offering something unique to the land development industry
We are a small team of salaried professionals. Every project is handled in-house — no freelancers, no outsourced core activities — which means our name is attached to everything we produce.
We became a CPT contractor because we routinely specified advanced in-situ testing for our own designs and found that the market couldn't reliably deliver it. The procurement lead times were long and the post-processing burden was significant. In 2020, while most businesses were retrenching, we purchased our own equipment. We are now the UK's only independent CPT contractor: not owned by a larger group, not subject to a parent company's commercial priorities.
We invest in our people, our equipment and our software because we think that's what the work requires. We believe in ongoing learning for all staff and we have always been willing to back that with real investment. Most other things, we find, follow from there.
Our Work
Aiming for the state of the art rather than the state of the practice
We work on projects where ground conditions are a genuine technical challenge — complex stratigraphy, problematic fill, difficult earthworks, ground improvement, slope stability, settlement-sensitive infrastructure. Our CPT capability extends across geotechnical site investigation, ground characterisation and the kind of data-intensive analysis that separates a well-founded design from a conservative one.
Our aim is to work closer to the state of the art than to the state of the practice. The gap between the two in construction and ground engineering is wider than it should be — in investigation quality, in design rigour, in how ground risk is actually managed — and we think there is real value in taking that seriously, project by project. We are not yet large, but we are deliberate about how we grow and what we take on.

About us
GES works directly and exclusively with leading specialists to deliver imaginative and effective designs for treatment of complex ground. We use a mix of high-end design, sophisticated ground investigation and laboratory work to offer practical consulting to the construction, utilities and civil engineering sectors. We’re animated by embracing new technologies and new approaches in a creative way with the highest measure of commitment to achieving the best possible data and results. With this ethos, our capabilities allow our customers to maximise their potential by leveraging our skills to complement their own in order to develop value as measured through cost savings, risk mitigation and safety.
Our Team
We are a scrappy group of capable professionals, dedicated to our mission. All staff are salaried professionals vested in the success of the company and all of our work is undertaken in-house, so no freelancers and none of our activities are sub-contracted or out-sourced. It would be easy to present the usual platitudes of “company culture” but, simply put, we believe in our science & technologies, we believe in on-going learning and development for all staff whatever their pursuits and we believe in putting our money where our mouth is with regard to investments in hardware and software. Everything else, pretty much takes care of itself.
Mission
Our mission is to contribute meaningfully to civil and private infrastructure with the ultimate goal of fundamentally and positively changing the construction and civil engineering economic sectors by raising standards of design and technology. We strive to do this by unlocking the drive and creativity of our staff so that they can chart their own course and leave their own mark, with their own style. Our belief is that through the dynamism of imaginative engineers, field operatives and researchers, through smart and talented people, our industry can change for the better in order to contemplate our generational challenges.
